Faster approximation schemes for the two-dimensional knapsack problem

An important question in theoretical computer science is to determine the best possible running time for solving a problem at hand. For geometric optimization problems, we often understand their complexity on a rough scale, but not very well on a finer scale. One such example is the two-dimensional knapsack problem for squares. There is a polynomial time (1 + )-approximation algorithm for it (i...

An approximation algorithm for solving unconstrained two-dimensional knapsack problems

An efficient heuristic for solving two-dimensional knapsack problems is proposed. The algorithm selects an optimal subset of optimal generated strips by solving a sequence of one-dimensional knapsack problems. We show that the number of these knapsacks can be reduced to only four knapsacks. The algorithm gives an excellent worst-case experimental approximation ratio (0.98), and a high percentag...

On Two Dimensional Orthogonal Knapsack Problem

In this paper, we study the following knapsack problem: Given a list of squares with profits, we are requested to pack a sublist of them into a rectangular bin (not a unit square bin) to make profits in the bin as large as possible. We first observe there is a Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (PTAS) for the problem of packing weighted squares into rectangular bins with large resources, then...

A New Fully Polynomial Approximation Scheme for the Knapsack Problem

A new fully polynomial approximation scheme (FPTAS) is presented for the classical 0{1 knapsack problem. It considerably improves the space requirements. The two best previously known approaches need O(n+1=" 3) and O(n1=") space, respectively. Our new approximation scheme requires only O(n + 1=" 2) space while also reducing the running time.

A Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme for the Multiple Knapsack Problem

The multiple knapsack problem (MKP) is a natural and well-known generalization of the single knapsack problem and is defined as follows. We are given a set of n items and m bins (knapsacks) such that each item i has a profit p(i) and a size s(i), and each bin j has a capacity c(j). The goal is to find a subset of items of maximum profit such that they have a feasible packing in the bins. MKP is...
